What exactly are hyacinths
Hyacinths, botanically known as hyacinthus, belong to the asparagus family and originate from the eastern Mediterranean region. Each flower bulb produces a sturdy flower stem densely packed with dozens of small, star shaped flowers. What makes the hyacinth truly unique is the fabulous scent that spreads as soon as the flowers open in spring. This scent not only attracts the attention of garden lovers, but also lures the first active bees and bumblebees to your garden. At Tulipstore we only deliver the largest size bulbs, ensuring full, powerful flower spikes and healthy growth.
The great benefits of hyacinths in your garden
Planting hyacinth bulbs brings numerous benefits. The most notable benefit is, of course, the sensory experience. The combination of bright colors and a powerful perfume is unique in the plant world. In addition, hyacinths are extremely versatile. They do fantastic in the open ground of a border, but due to their compact growth height of about twenty five centimeters, they are also perfectly suited for pots and planters on the terrace or balcony. Another big plus is that hyacinths are excellently resistant to changeable spring weather. The sturdy stems can withstand a blast of wind or a heavy rain shower, keeping the flower display beautiful for a long time.
How to plant and care for hyacinths the best way
The basis for a successful bloom is laid in autumn. The ideal period to plant hyacinth bulbs runs from September until the end of December, provided the ground is not frozen. Hyacinths prefer a location in full sun or partial shade. It is important that the soil is well draining and nutrient rich. Soil that is too wet in winter can cause the bulbs to rot.
Dig a planting hole that is about three times as deep as the height of the bulb, which usually means a depth of ten to fifteen centimeters. Place the bulb with the pointed side facing up and maintain a planting distance of about ten centimeters for a nice, compact effect. After planting, cover the bulbs with the surrounding soil and press it down lightly.
Care tips during growth and after flowering
During the winter months, hyacinth bulbs need a cold period to develop the flower bud inside. You do not need to give extra water during this period. In early spring, when the first green noses appear above the ground, you can keep the soil slightly moist in case of prolonged drought.
Once the hyacinth has finished blooming, we recommend cutting the flower stem out completely. This prevents the plant from wasting energy on making seeds. Do let the green foliage turn completely yellow and die off. In this way, the bulb extracts the remaining nutrients from the leaf and stores them for the following year. If you leave the bulbs in the ground, they can come up again the following year, although the flower spikes will then often be slightly looser and more natural in shape.
