To have more pleasure from your garden you can use layer planting, also known as lasagne planting. This makes a much longer flowering time by using multiple varieties under each other in layers.
For example, you plant late flowering varieties (late tulips and alliums) bottom, middle early flowering varieties (triumph tulips or hyacinths) in the middle and early flowering varieties (crocus / kaufmanianna tulips) on top. Between the layers five centimeters soil must be maintained. Plant the bulbs close together that they almost touch each other for a wonderful sea of flowers but leave enough space so the underlying variety can come through. After planting the bulbs add water and you are assured of a long and colourful spring. You can apply this method in the ground but also in pots and baskets. At the bottom of pots small holes are needed so that excess water can drain away.
